Scenic Beach--Songdan
In Riwon County of South Hamgyong Province, there is a scenic beach called Songdan which is well known to the Korean people.

According to a historical record, there was not a single pine but a long sandy beach in the area until the first half of the 17th century, where farming was not good owing to the sea wind.
So, the local people began to plant and cultivate young pine trees along the sandy beach in order to create a windbreak. Those trees grew thick and in the first half of the 18th century, a thick forest was created along the wide beach with only sand blown off by the wind.
The boundless expanse of pine woods are in good harmony with the clear and blue sea and the sandy beach with full-blown sweet briers, presenting a superb view. A modern rest home has been built there.
