Efforts for Development of Tourism
The Third Meeting of the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization held in Spain in 1979 adopted a decision on commemorating September 27 every year as the World Tourist Day.
The World Tourist Day was designated with the aim of impressing the people with the role and importance of tourism along with its influence on the whole socio-economic life including politics, the economy and culture in the world. The World Tourism Organization sets diverse themes and conducts various activities and events every year on the occasion of the World Tourist Day.
The theme of the World Tourist Day this year is "Tourism and Sustainable Transformation".
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea became a member state of the World Tourism Organization in 1987. It is conducting the work to conserve tourist resources, develop new ones and protect the environment according to a well thought-out plan while looking far ahead into the future of development of tourism.
In recent years an active nationwide work has been done in the DPRK to establish tourist culture of Korean style.
The decree "On Adopting the DPRK Law on Tourism" was adopted at the 27th Plenary Meeting of the 14th Standing Committee of the Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK on August 30, 2023, further consolidating the legal guarantee for development of tourism.
An inaugural ceremony of the Wonsan Kalma Coastal Tourist Area was held with splendour on June 24, 2025. Its inauguration was a prelude to a new era of tourism of our country and an important cultural progress that set up an epochal milestone in the building of the tourist industry of our own style.
A coastal resort town was built on the Kalma peninsula famous for its beautiful seashore from olden times, in which hundreds of buildings of modern beauty and in various forms were built in harmony with the scenery of the coastal area widely, achieving a perfect artistic compatibility and connectivity.
The tourist area has hotels which can be chosen by the tourists from home and abroad according to their tastes. There are sea-bathing service facilities and various sports, amusement, commercial and public catering facilities fully equipped with all the necessary conditions, as well as facilities for other cultural and leisure activities, which can offer the real taste of the east coast all year round.
That day, the respected ComradeKim Jong Un , General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea, looked round different places of the Wonsan Kalma Coastal Tourist Area and indicated an important orientation for expanding and developing tourism of our style on a large scale, noting
that in our country with diverse and rich tourist resources and
political stability and institutional durability peculiar to it, its
tourist industry is of great prospective significance as a motive power
promoting the efflorescence and development of the cultural field and
the advancement of the relevant regions and contributing to the overall
economic growth of the state.
Successes and experiences gained in the construction of the Wonsan Kalma Coastal Tourist Area are a proud first step of looking ahead into the bright prospect of development of tourism.
Our tourism will leave a big step in the development of the world tourism while making a constant progress under the concern and guidance of the WPK and the DPRK government.
