Scientific researches for protecting wetlands intensified
The Biodiversity Institute of the State Academy of Sciences intensified the investigation and study of the distribution of migratory birds at migratory bird (wetland) reserves and wetlands in conformity with the physiographical conditions of the country which is located in the middle of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway and has developed wetlands on the east and west coasts and in inland.
In recent years alone, the institute clarified the distribution of migratory birds at more than 10 wetlands and the value of their protection and selected them as proposed reserves through a field survey of all migratory bird (wetland) reserves in the country.
It also set the reserve boundaries and functional areas rationally and solved scientific and technological problems for better protection of migratory birds and wetlands, their habitats.
It makes a regular survey of migratory birds and wetlands in January and February every year, contributing to the global survey of water-birds.
The DPRK joined the Wetlands Convention (Ramsar Convention) in May 2018.
