Mausoleum of King Tangun

The Mausoleum of King Tangun is on the ridge at the foot of Mt. Taebak in Munhung-ri, Kangdong County in the capital city of Pyongyang.
Tangun founded Ancient Joson, the first ancient state in the history of Korea.

Ancient Joson was founded at the beginning of the 30th century B.C. and existed till 108 B.C.
Until the end of the last century Tangun was known as a mythical being and Tangun Korea also told as a legendary tale. As Tangun's remains and relics were unearthed in February 1993, however, it was scientifically clarified that Tangun was not a mythical being, but a real person who was born about 5,011 years ago from the time of unearthing.
The Mausoleum of King Tangun covers a total area of 45 hectares.
It is a heap of stones in the form of a regular pyramid, which was gradated upwards from the bottom.
It is largely made up of nine steps and each step was divided into three layers which were gradually gradated.
A portrait of Tangun is hanging on the front wall of the main chamber.
Two biers lie from south to north on the floor of the main chamber and on them there are coffins with the remains of Tangun and his wife.
From olden times, the Korean people set October 3, when Tangun was born, as the National Foundation Day and held a memorial service for him on the day.
Such custom is still carried forward and memorial services for Tangun are held at the Mausoleum of King Tangun every year.

The Mausoleum of King Tangun is a precious cultural treasure as it has the remains of Tangun, the founding father of the Korean nation, and carries the historical contents showing the developed culture and political, economic and military power in the period of Tangun Korea.
